NWCS Newsletter Week 2: 9/19/20

Dear NWCS Families,
It was great to see everyone virtually on Day 1 – Opening Assembly last week.  Although we miss a lot of fun interaction in person when students and parents meet for the first time after a long summer break, this is a true group effort to have our school opening this way.  As I am making the final batch of textbook distribution this week, students will slowly settle into the routine in the near future.  I appreciate any feedback you might have to help our online learning better and fun for our students.  Below are some items to share:
School Calendar and Important Date:
You may find our school calendar online.  The last date to withdraw (less books and registration fee) with 100% refund is 9/26/20.  Last date withdrawn with a 50% refund is 10/10/20.
Reward Station:

We created a reward station last year for students to redeem their prize after earning sufficient stickers (performance based) in their class.  This is one way to incentivize participation and learning.  Due to the online learning format, the teacher in the participating class will create a sticker sheet to record students’ collection.  By the end of semester, the result will be shared with parents and students.  We will create an online catalog with pictures and number the quantity available to select.  Further detailed information will be available as the semester moves forward.

NWCS Newsletter Week 1: Start of School Welcome – Fall 2020

Dear NWCS families,

歡迎大家來到北威中文學校!

This Saturday, September 12th, is the first day of Chinese school for the Fall 2020 semester.

Due to the pandemic this year, we will conduct virtual classroom via ZOOM or Google Meet this semester and evaluate later in the year for spring semester.  I want to take this opportunity to thank our teachers, board members, and staff for their contributions to our school smooth operation and for laying the foundation for our continued success.

In preparation for the first day of school, please see below for a few important announcements.

Open assembly
We will start school’s opening assembly at 9am sharp via ZOOM. Kindly remember to join with your child(ren).  Students will join their respective teachers via per-communicated ZOOM invite. We aim to have the students in their classrooms by 9:15am after reviewing school safety policy and classroom etiquette. Break as usual is at 10am and our languages classes end at 11 am and followed by electives until 12:00.

FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL: General Assembly Zoom Meeting

We will start on 9/12/20 with a ZOOM general assembly from 9-9:15am. After this, each student should sign into their respective classes. Please use this link for the general assembly.

Electives

We have added more electives and bring more culture experience for our students to learn something new, and do something fun.   Besides those electives in the email from Chairperson, Wei, we are excited to offer the Yoga class for kids (age 10+) and adults. All students are welcomed to take or tour the electives from 11am to noon.

Be our class parent
Each teacher has been asked to elect a class parent to help with events coordination and school communication chain. Please consider nominating yourself! This school depends on volunteers. Your active participation would be greatly appreciated.

Summer homework assignment
In preparation of the first day of class, kindly remind the kids to finish their summer work assignments and review what was learnt last year. For kids that have completed their summer homework assignments, they will be awarded 10 raffle tickets (pending teacher’s verification).

Preparation for new school year 2020-2021

Dear NWCS Families,
Can not believe we are near September so soon.  As we prepare for school opening, this year will be somewhat different from past years.  Because of online learning, some students will continue to use their textbooks from last semester.  Some will need new textbooks.  I plan to distribute textbooks at Briarcliff Public Library this weekend (Saturday and Sunday).  I will send another detailed email to families who will need to come and pick up textbooks.  For those who already know your child(ren) needs textbooks and will not be able to pick up due to Labor Day weekend travel, please let me know in advance so I can rearrange another pick up date during the week.
Below is the address for Briarcliff public library:
1 Library Rd, Briarcliff Manor, NY 10510
Also, please take a look at our third hour elective course and encourage your kids to take sign up one culture class since this is already included in the tuition for the year.

NWCS – 2020/2021 Announcement and Calendar

Dear NWCS Families,
Hope this letter finds you resting, relaxing and enjoying plenty of special family time this summer.  To prepare the new school year opening, we have decided to stay online learning via ZOOM or Google Meet this fall semester and reassess in spring.  At this present time, the information I have gathered from Briarcliff School District is to prepare “full” in-person re-opening in the middle school.  After consulting with some family members and teaching staff, we think it’s safer to remain virtual learning.
First day of fall semester will be 9/12/20.  If you have not enrolled, please take a few moments to register at NWCS web site and help us spread the words.  As announced before, starting this year, 3rd hour culture class fee (exclude handling /material fee) will be included in the regular tuition with the exception of SAT Prep and Coding class.  We are still working to add more culture classes in the offering list.  Due to the limitation of online learning, we may change the format for 3rd hour elective or rearrange students to participate in different classes.  For example, calligraphy most likely will be conducted as a penmanship program.
- For Kung Fu class, we will have an instructor, who is ranked 3rd place in TKD nationally and 1st in NY state, to teach students self defense and personal fitness.  Who wants to be in?!
- We are very pleased to invite our long time NWCS friend, Terry Taylor, back to teach our kids sewing/craft class.  Her class was well received by many of our students.  When enrolling this class, material lists will be communicated and purchased by parents in advance.  This class has been added to NWCS registration list recently.

NWCS Spring’20 – Newsletter Week 14 – Fall’20 early registration opens 6/13/20 to 7/17/20

Dear NWCS Families,
Thank you for those who joined our online general assembly last weekend.  Last day of Chinese school is 6/20/20.  Students will have their final exams either this week or last day of school.
1). Due to the virus outbreak, we will mail out certificates to speech contest winners by the end of semester instead of handing out trophies in person like previous years.  For Pre-K and Kindergarten students, we will mail out moving up certificates as well.
2). As mentioned in last week’s general assembly, we stay close dialogue with Briarcliff school district about school facility reopening.  Although no specific decision has been made yet, we still work to prepare ourselves for both online and physical classrooms in the coming semester.

NWCS Spring ’20 – Newsletter – Week 12

Dear NWS Families,
Happy Friday and hope all is well.  Many thanks to our volunteers with their help to make the speech contest a success.  Overall, it’s a very encouraging outcome to see how much preparation students have worked for this annual event.
With ongoing online learning throughout this semester,  I have the opportunity, along with some school personnel,  to observe various classes for online learning environment, student participation, and teaching materials.  We want to make sure we are providing an adequate environment and material we can to improve each student’s language skill.  One positive takeaway is that our students appear more comfortable and willing to practice Mandarin during class sessions.
To take advantage of this opportunity, we like to expand our online tutoring during the 3rd hour period in the regular semester. Currently, two senior students will join our regular tutoring teacher Miss. Fu to offer online tutoring.  If you kids would like to sign up for practice, please feel free to let me know. I can get students connected and arrange the ZOOM communication.
Best Regards,
Rick Chan 詹文芳

NWCS Spring ’20 – Newsletter – Week 11 – Speech Contest Continues

Dear NWCS Families,
Finally, we can feel the spring weather around our neighborhood!  Hope everyone is doing well and gets a chance to step outside of the house.  We had our 1st round of speech contest done last week.  More classes will continue their contests this weekend.  Please help us to supervise with the practice from home.  I like to express my special thanks to our volunteers who kindly serve as a judge in this annual event.
There is no Chinese school for the weekend of 05/23/20 to observe Memorial Day.

NWCS Spring ’20 – Newsletter – Week 9 – Online Speech Contest on 5/9/20 & 5/16/20

Dear NWCS Families,
As the weather gets warmer, I miss outdoor activities and the interaction with friends and everyone from Chinese school.  I hope everyone is staying safe and doing well during this tough time.
We set the date to host a two-week speech contest on 5/9/20 and 5/16/20.  Participation in this contest is mandatory for every student.  Teachers have been working with students to choose a topic and practice.  Please encourage your kids to practice their speech.  If additional assistance is needed, please feel free to reach out to teachers for more practice.
Since this contest will be conducted online, we are looking for volunteers to be a judge.  If you are fluent with Mandarian and have extra device from home to access internet, I really appreciate your support to be one of the judges.  I am looking for 12~18 volunteers for 14 different classes with 3 judges per class.  Please send me a separate email by the end of this week to join the judging panel.
Best Regards,
Rick Chan 詹文芳
