NWCS Spring 2013 – Week 04 – 03/16/2013

Happy St. Patty’s Day!  Hope everyone had a good week and is ready for the Chinese School tomorrow.

There have been some inquiries regarding the school schedule.  Traditionally, we follow the hosting school’s calendar and during the one week break, we take the first Saturday off.  Therefore we are scheduled to be off next Saturday, March 23, 2013, as the hosting school starts their Spring break.  We will resume our next class on March 30, 2013.  Some families have mentioned that March 31st is Easter and they will be missing school on the 30th as they will be traveling.  That said, we are asking the teachers to take that into consideration … maybe no quiz on the 30th?  J  In any case, if there are still quizzes, one can always take a make up the following week.

Just a reminder, one of the counselors pointed out to me that my twins missed the calligraphy class on week 2. As spring arrives and the sport season starts, if your kids are going to miss classes, please inform the teachers so they are aware.  As you can see, I forgot to do so and already was called out.  In all seriousness, it is for the safety of the students and to not cause unnecessary worries for the teachers.

A quick glance at the upcoming weeks:

03/16 – Week 04

03/23 – No School

03/30 – Week 05 – Parent Teacher meeting, possibly will be rescheduled due to reason stated above

04/06 – Board Meeting

We are also working with ACS – the Association of Chinese Schools to host two events: Karoke contest and Writing Contest.  More details to follow.

I wish everyone a Happy St. Patrick’s Day!  Don’t forget to wear something green.  Green ties, green shoes, green shirt, green skirt, green gloves, green hats …. Ummm, actually, green hats are a big no no in Chinese culture.  A green hat means a woman did something inappropriate (to say it nicely) and brought shame to the husband and now the husband has to wear a green hat!  So wear anything green but the hat!

We sent out an invitation to some of our Irish friends (everyone is Irish on St. Patty’s Day) to a cornbeef and cabbage luncheon … one friend RSVPed and said “We will be there, what should we bring?”  I replied “Didn’t you read the invite, bring cornbeef and cabbage”.  J

Speaking of food, don’t forget to order your lunch!  Here is the link http://23.23.192.51/ibm-restaurant/onlineorder.html

NWCS Spring 2013 – Week 03 – 03/09/2013

Let it snow! Let it snow! Let it snow! I hope that everyone is staying safe and warm.  The snow should be clear by tomorrow, just in time for Chinese School! So hurry and finish your Chinese homework and study for the quiz.

Does anyone have any portable projectors that they no longer use and would like to donate to the school?  Our teachers would like to utilize some of the online material to share with the students and we thought maybe you have a projector stored in the closet somewhere that you might like to donate.  Just let me know. Thanks!

Our Dean is planning our annual Speech and Writing Contests and games for our students to participate in.  More details to follow.

Also this May we will be having our General Meeting where we will be electing 4 new board members as well as Principal, Vice Principal, Treasurer, and Secretary.  If anyone would like to find out more about these positions, please come see any of us.  This school runs on volunteers and we need all of you to step up and lend a hand.

So one of the parents of 6B, George Chuang, sent me the following link and thought it would be nice to torture, I mean to educate our children about the Chinese Family tree.  Enjoy!

NWCS Spring 2013 – Week 02 – 03/02/2013

Happy March everyone! Yup, it is hard to believe but we are almost done with the first quarter of the year!

The year of snake has been good so far. J Let’s just hope it will continue throughout. Thank you for those who attended the week 1 assembly. We emphasized the importance of respecting others’ property and asked not only the parents, but especially the students, to help make this a pleasant and safe environment for learning!

As mentioned, Mohawk Day Camp, who had graciously provided their wonderful space for NWCS to host our first ever Family Fun Day in August of last year, will be at our school tomorrow! NWCS families had a great time at the Mohawk Day Camp and everyone was amazed at the many different and wonderful activities they have for the campers.  It was truly a fun filled day for all of us and we all enjoyed it.  Representatives from the day camp will be coming on site tomorrow for us to find out more about their programs. Dr. Lynn Winters, one of our board members, will be your host tomorrow.  Any questions, please see Dr. Winters.

Last but not least, a message from our breakfast club representative, Angela Huang:

After you enrich yourself with a whole day of Chinese study, don’t forget to enrich your stomach with some fine Chinese cuisine which also enriches the school’s coffer. Please order your lunch at:

NWCS Spring 2013 – Week 01 – 02/23/2013

Welcome back everyone!  I hope that everyone enjoyed the break and had a wonderful Chinese New Year celebration.

We had a great time with family and friends for the Super Bowl.  Throughout the whole game, I just kept on wondering which team the Mom of the coaches was rooting for.  Having twins myself, playing on different team in sports, I find myself often skipping those games when they play against each other.  I rely on my husband to text me the scores so I know who to congratulate and who to console when they get home. J  The New Year celebration was nice, enjoying family and good friends getting together, remembering the good, leaving behind the bad of the past year and moving forward with the New Year.  Happy Year of the Snake, everyone!  Last but not least, I hope that everyone had a lovely Valentine’s Day as well.   Now, it is time to get our minds back on school.  I am sending this weekly message a day earlier so you have one last day to complete your winter break homework!

The teachers and the board members met last Saturday to review administrative items and to discuss the upcoming semester’s agenda.   Week 1 will be this Saturday, 2/23, for the Spring semester.  There are several announcements that we would like to share with you so we ask you to be at the school Gym at 8:45 am sharp for a brief assembly.  Please be on time!

There had been several inquiries about summer programs already.  We are working with several local establishments who have summer programs that might be of interest to you, to come to our school to talk about what they have to offer.  Not sure if you remember, but last summer we had a Family Fun Day at the Mohawk Day Camp where NWCS families spent a fun day enjoying numerous activities.  We have invited them to come to our school on Saturday, 3/2, to share their program information with you.  Stay tuned for more details.

See you on Saturday at 8:45am in the Gym!  Please be on time.

NWCS Week 14 – 01/12/2013

Hello Everyone!

Here we are! The last week of the Fall Semester!  We have final exams on Saturday and then the celebration starts!

Graduation for the 6th grade and 9th grade (as of the Spring of 2012), and the 12th grade will start at 1:30 pm in the High School auditorium.  The High School auditorium is the first building when you come into the school.  It is connected to the Middle School.  This year we have seventeen  6th graders graduating, six 9th graders and nine 12th graders!  Lots of diplomas to give out! What a wonderful time this is.  J

Please find out the time and location to meet for your class’s performances from your teachers and be on time!  The teachers and students have been working very hard on their performances and the staff has been working tirelessly preparing the stage, coordinating the dinner menu, and organizing the carnivals to guarantee a fun day for all.

I hope you have purchased your dinner tickets and will be joining us for a day of wonderful activities!

Cindy Huang and Cherry Kung, our board members, want me to remind you that there is still time to purchase your raffle tickets.  30 tickets for only $20.  The prizes include a Kindle Fire HD, PS3, tons of gift cards (thank you to those who donated them) and much more!  Cindy and Cherry will be in the cafeteria.

And if you are like me, planning to stay in the school throughout the day, you can order your lunch and the kids can enjoy a movie between 12:30 pm to 2:00 pm.  Save time and gas (driving home and back).  Order your lunch here: http://23.23.192.51/ibm-restaurant/onlineorder.html

After the celebration, we will be off for the holidays, Chinese New Year is February 10th and it is the year of the Snake!  We will be back for week 1 of the Spring semester on February 23.

See you on Saturday!  Classes start at 9am sharp.  Please be on time.

NWCS Week 13 – 01/05/2013

Brrrrrrr, I hope everyone had a warm, safe, and happy New Year!   We will resume our week 13 tomorrow and we have a lot happening!

Our senior class is busy preparing for their graduation speeches while the other classes continue to rehearse for their performances.  It is one of the most important days of the school year.

The 12th grade is finished after the Fall semester and then they graduate, thereby allowing them time to complete their college applications.  The 6th and 9th grades who graduated in the Spring of 2012 will also be having graduation ceremonies and will receive their diplomas as well.  The graduation is scheduled for 1:30pm on 1/12/2013.

The class performances are scheduled to start right after that at 2:30pm.  The current 6th graders will be our MCs to announce each performance. Each 12th grade graduate will deliver their speech in Chinese before each performance as well.  It is a day that we celebrate the hard work of our students, teachers and YES, the parents!

Dinner follows, as well as the Carnival, where our Vice Principal, Ms. Shuna Awong, has lots of fun activities planned. It will definitely be a night for the kids to remember.

Purchase your tickets tomorrow!!!!  Right after your purchase your lunch!  Here is the link:  http://23.23.192.51/ibm-restaurant/onlineorder.html  :-)

Board meeting is at 9:15 am in the faculty room.  Guess what the topic is… you guessed it!!!  It is all about our Annual Graduation and Chinese New Year Celebration.  If you can help in any way, please let Ms. Shuna Awong know asap.

See you tomorrow!  Classes start at 9am sharp.  Please be on time.

NWCS Week 12 – 12/15/2012

Tis the season to be jolly … hello everyone,

I was hoping that this weekly email would be a light hearted one given the upcoming holiday season, but I am sorry to say that there have been some disturbing events at our school that I need to bring to your attention.

There were at least 2 incidents with the classrooms in the past 3 weeks that our chairman was contacted by the host school’s principal and teachers.  Both incidents involved the teachers’ desks.  One had the paper totally re-arranged and unorganized and the other incident from last week, the teacher found glue stick marks run across the computer monitor.  I find these incidents quite disturbing as we have always prided ourselves on taking good care of the school property as a way of showing our appreciation to the school sharing space with us.  I know that the teachers are doing their best to control the classroom and making sure that the classrooms are put back to the way it was found.  Our counselors and chairman take a tour every Saturday after school is over to make sure that the classrooms are in good order, but we need your help as well!

Just a few reminders:

  • ·         Students are not to touch the teachers’ desks in the classrooms;
  • ·         No running in the school hall ways (this is no different than the regular school days);
  • ·         No eating or drinking in the classrooms;
  • ·         Students who do not attend class during the 3rd period should stay in the cafeteria with their parents.

I am asking the parents on duty to help monitor the activities in the hall ways and the teachers to make sure that there is no eating or drinking in the classrooms.  I am asking that the students help the teachers to maintain the classroom and together we can continue to use this wonderful school to learn Chinese together.  Any feedback or ideas on how we can further improve our control, please share with me.  (No, George, we cannot use the bamboo stick!)  After all, this is our school and we are all in this together!  Please help!

On a lighter note, this is our last week of school for the year.  Some teachers are scheduling their Chinese New Year performances rehearsals in the High School Auditorium.  I hope you will encourage your kids to practice and invite everyone in your family and friends to come see them perform on January 12, 2013.

As for tomorrow, someone in a big red suit might be visiting … hope you all have been good this year … HO HO HO!  Let’s have a great last class of the year and welcome the New Year with lots of cheers …

See you tomorrow!  Classes start at 9:00am sharp.  Please be on time.

NWCS Week 11 – 12/08/2012

Hello Everyone,

I hope you had a great week with some of the warmer weather early on …but now it feels like winter has arrived.  The colder weather will definitely wake everyone up and keep everyone awake for Chinese School tomorrow.  J

There are a few events happening for tomorrow:

  • Scholarship applicationsare due tomorrow.   Please see Ms. Cherry Kung.
  • Parent consent forms are due tomorrow.  We will be taking many school pictures and would like to have your permission.  Please take a few minutes to review and sign the form sent home with your kids last week.  The form was also attached in last week’s email.   Please see Mr. Mike Andrews.
  • Our Annual New Year Celebration is scheduled for January 12 and as we do every year, we have great prizes.  The raffle tickets will be on sale starting this Saturday!!  Look for the sale in the cafeteria.
  • And last but not least, next Saturday, 12/15 is our last day of Chinese School of the year before the holidays!  As you shop for the holidays, please also check out our Shop.com (http://www.shop.com/search/nwcsny), the link is also on our school site.  As mentioned during the General Meeting, you can purchase almost anything your heart desires on this site which sometimes even have a better prices than in the stores … and that’s not all, with each purchase, a certain percentage will be donated to our school.   I was looking for gift cards for the teachers and this would be a great place to shop!  Won’t you give it a try!!!!!  Any questions about the site, please see Ms.  Cindy Huang.
  • Board meeting is scheduled at 10:10am in the faculty room.

Whew, that was a mouth full!  Now that I have taken care of the business items, just wanted to share the following with you:

One of my twins came home from school and told me this story.  One of his friends told him that he got a “B” on one of his exams.  His mom looked at the grade for a while and said to him, “Remember son, we are A’sian not B’sian. “  Boy, tiger moms everywhere.  Of course my son said “… but mom, aren’t we ‘C’hinese?” With a deadly glare from me, he knew better. J With that, don’t forget to finish your homework for tomorrow and study for the quizzes.  Remember, we are ‘A’merican, not ‘B’merican!  J  Relax!  Tis the season to be jolly …

It is Friday, have you ordered your lunch for Saturday yet?  Here is the link:  http://23.23.192.51/ibm-restaurant/onlineorder.html

See you tomorrow!  Classes start at 9am sharp.  Please be on time.
